Grizzly Entertainment returned to the University of Maine on September 12, 2026, for a custom 400-drone light show following the Black Bears’ football home opener against Merrimack in Orono.
The post-game performance was designed specifically around Maine Athletics and University of Maine traditions, bringing another custom aerial production to the UMaine campus after our first shows there in 2025.
The University of Maine Athletics announcement introduced the performance as the return of Grizzly Entertainment following the previous year’s Homecoming drone shows.
Returning to the University of Maine
This was not our first project at UMaine.
In October 2025, Grizzly Entertainment produced two drone light shows during University of Maine Homecoming. One took place during alumni programming, while another was connected to Maine Athletics.
Those performances marked the first drone shows in the university’s history and established the foundation for returning to campus for the 2026 football season.
Coming back for another event gave us the opportunity to develop a new concept around Maine Athletics, the football programme and the atmosphere surrounding a Black Bears home game.
A University of Maine Drone Show Built Around Maine Athletics
Every university drone show has its own creative requirements.
School colors, logos, mascots, traditions, landmarks and historic moments can all become part of the visual language of a show. The goal is to create aerial content that feels connected to the institution and the audience watching below.
For the 2026 University of Maine drone show, the creative direction focused specifically on Maine Athletics and UMaine traditions.
The 400-drone production was developed around the identity of the university and its athletics programme, creating a show designed for that specific event rather than using a standard sequence.
That project-focused approach is an important part of how Grizzly Entertainment develops collegiate productions. A university event in Maine should feel different from a show created for a university in California or another sports venue. The school, event, audience and traditions shape the creative direction.
Bringing the Drone Show Into Football Game Day
The September 12 performance followed Maine’s home football opener against Merrimack.
Rather than operating as a separate campus event, the drone show was scheduled as part of the evening’s game-day experience, beginning after the football game.
That timing extended the event beyond the stadium and gave fans another shared moment after the final whistle.
Drone shows can be integrated into several points of a sports event, including pre-game presentations, halftime productions and post-game programming. The right format depends on the venue, flight area, audience position and event schedule.
From UMaine Homecoming to Football
Returning to the same campus also creates different creative opportunities from a first-time project.
The 2025 performances were connected with Homecoming and university athletics. The 2026 production shifted the focus toward the football season while maintaining the connection to UMaine’s broader identity.
We do not approach recurring projects by simply repeating an existing show. The event context, audience and objectives can change from year to year, giving the creative team an opportunity to develop something that belongs to that specific occasion.
The September performance became another chapter in Grizzly Entertainment’s work with the University of Maine rather than a recreation of the previous year’s shows.
Collegiate Drone Shows Across the United States
University sports are an important part of Grizzly Entertainment’s work in the United States.
Our collegiate projects have included a 400-drone halftime show for the Cal Bears at UC Berkeley and a UCLA Bruins drone show at the Rose Bowl, alongside projects for other university and professional sports organizations.
Each venue creates a different operational and creative environment.
Stadium configuration, launch areas, audience viewing direction, game timing and the university’s visual identity all influence how a show is planned. You can also explore more about our approach to drone shows for sports events.
Another Night Above Orono
For Grizzly Entertainment, returning to the University of Maine continued a relationship that began with the university’s first drone light shows in 2025.
A year later, 400 drones were back above the athletics campus, this time as part of the opening home football weekend and with a show developed around Maine Athletics and UMaine traditions.
For universities, athletic departments and event teams planning a football game, Homecoming, anniversary, graduation or other major campus event, Grizzly Entertainment develops each drone show around the institution, location, audience and purpose of the event.
